Stephen Webster was born in Blantyre, Scotland, in 1951. At six weeks his parents took him south to London. His father, Drew, was a political journalist and his mother, Jan, became a successful writer of novels and short stories. He grew up in Croydon, and has fond memories of his grammar school art teacher, Phylis Hallett, who encouraged his talent and suggested he go to Bath Academy of Art, Corsham.

This he much enjoyed, making some lasting friendships, but he moved on to Leeds University, where he studied Fine Art under Lawrence Gowing. In his final year there he won Second Prize in the Winsor and Newton competition for students and because of this found a place on the one year MA in Painting at Chelsea School of Art, lead by Jack Smith and Ian Stephenson. He returned to Corsham for a Fellowship in Painting; 1976-77 afterwards moving to Bath, where he completed ‘For the Sun’ which was the last painting of his youth in the many-layered elaborate style.

In Bath he lived and worked above the Bridge Bookshop; later opening a small gallery on the first floor, where he showed Jack Smith and John Wragg RA, among others. In 1983 he became Director of the Festival Gallery, Bath for two years.

Since then he has combined painting with part-time jobs, some of them putting his talent for cooking to good use.

He has had various exhibitions ,mostly in Bath, the last being at Chapel Row Gallery in 2007.

Since the age of fifteen his passion for music has gone side by side with his love for painting. He lives and works in Batheaston, just outside the city of Bath.
